BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of a Library Media Teacher or assigned supervisor, coordinate and perform a variety of technical library functions at a secondary school site; coordinate acquisition, circulation, distribution, and storage of library books, textbooks and audio/visual materials; assist students and staff in the selection of library materials and access to digital resources; implement the District's plan for the acquisition of library skills and library orientation.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Library Media Technician series is responsible to perform specialized library functions and maintain the library collection and equipment including print and digital materials. Incumbents are responsible for classification, cataloging, circulation, inventory and recovery of library books and reference materials. The Library Media Technician Secondary classification is responsible for budget related duties such as entering requisitions, preparing deposits, and reconciling budgets. This classification is also responsible for independently monitoring large groups of students in a multi-faceted environment throughout the school day. The Library Media Technician Elementary classification is assigned to an elementary school site and schedules the day to day operations of the school library under the direction of the Principal. The Literacy Media Resource Technician differs from the other classifications by providing technical support in the use of software, literacy media and related equipment at a school site with a limited print collection.
Examples of Duties
- Perform technical library functions at a secondary school site, including organization, distribution, and storage of library books, textbooks and digital media; perform technical library functions in a highly computerized library environment at a secondary school site; provide instructional support for students and staff using the library for research purposes or computer software programs; promote student use of the library for research purposes and reading pleasure. E
- Receive, issue and control textbook inventory using a computerized textbook program; schedule use of core literature with teachers; transfer textbook materials to and from other school sites. E
- Coordinate the annual distribution of district adopted textbook and digital content materials; perform yearly inventory of textbooks in accordance with established timelines; ensure all students have the required textbooks.Assist with researching vendors and receiving price quotes, coordinate textbook deliveries and resolve related issues. E
- Provide assistance and reinforcement to individuals or groups of students using district/school computers and mobile devices in a variety of settings. E
- Assist staff in the selection and requisitioning of library and teacher materials; research and preview new materials; notify teachers of newly-arrived materials applicable to classroom topics or themes; compile lists of potential purchases; enter requisitions for the purchase of books, magazines, textbooks, other print and digital materials, and supplies into the district purchasing program. E
- Assist students in researching print and digital resources/databases, online encyclopedias; assist students in locating and selecting materials using the computerized catalog systems and online databases; assist in the instruction of students in proper methods of utilizing the library and digital reference sources; maintain computerized online catalog. E
- Facilitate, organize and manage circulation activities; use computerized library program; check library and textbook materials in and out to students and staff; check and prepare materials for return to the circulating collection; shelve returned books, materials and computer equipment; reserve books for students and staff; prepare and route materials for interlibrary loan requests. E
- Issue library and identification cards for new students, staff and volunteers throughout the year; issue replacement identification cards. Take and upload digital pictures for ID cards into district database. E
- Organize and prepare library displays, decorations, bulletin boards and activities; maintain the library, computers and environment in a clean and orderly condition.
- Observe and assist in the management of student behavior according to approved procedures; monitor student behavior on library computers in the library. E
- Receive, process and input library material and textbook orders; process materials for introduction into the library materials collection; prepare and print labels; affix identification and bar-code labels to materials; input related information into assigned computer database. E
- Maintain record of overdue materials and send overdue notices to students and teachers; place holds on student schedules, yearbooks, etc. for unpaid fines, dues and other monies owed; clear students of library fines, debts and delinquencies; collect books, materials and money and notify appropriate staff of clearance. E
- Evaluate and maintain library materials and textbooks; pull and route materials in need of mending, binding or discarding; assess need for replacement or repair; perform minor repairs to damaged books and library materials; maintain online records of lost or damaged books. E
- Organize and participate in inventory activities as directed; analyze and correct errors for books that are incorrectly scanned, deleted, paid for, etc., delete catalog records to assure accuracy and accountability; consult with teachers to provide input regarding obsolete materials. E
- Prepare deposits for site finance technician; reconcile and balance assigned accounts; input electronic budget transfers to clear negatives; prepare written request for refunds from library budgets from school finance technician. E
- Perform general clerical work such as keyboarding, duplicating, entering information into a computer and maintaining various files and records, both digital and in print; compile, prepare and type correspondence, lists, reports, records and a variety of other materials. E
- Operate and maintain a variety of office and instructional equipment, including a computer, printer, barcode scanner, tablet, laptop, digital projector, document camera, fax machine and other digital devices . E
- Communicate with a variety of internal and external contacts regarding library operations, materials, equipment and supplies. E
- Participate in the coordination of book fairs and other special events in the library. E
- Train and provide work direction and guidance to student assistants, student volunteers and adult volunteers.
- Attend a variety of in-service trainings, workshops and meetings related to assigned activities.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
