The Automation Manager will lead a collaborative team that provides engineering and technical support for both internal and external customer projects, while facilitating continuous improvement throughout the manufacturing organization to provide outstanding services to our customers.

Key Responsibilities for the Automation Manager include:
- Provide leadership, direction, training, and growth opportunities for the Automation staff.
- Engage and communicate with Sales and other internal customers along with external customers to ensure alignment of needs and Automation capabilities.
- Plan, conceptualize, and create mechanical designs for new products, label applicators, and special equipment; develop and perform testing processes and validation of new designs.
- Manage multi-disciplinary team members to generate working prototypes for beta testing and customer demonstration.
- Perform detailed documentation to track project development and design process, ensuring timelines are met and projects stay within budget.
- Lead team in improvements and integration of various equipment components and accessories; ensure process improvement through data collection, standardized procedures, and teamwork.
- Supervise equipment installations for internal and external customers, including traveling to Smyth facilities and/or customer sites
- Ensure all staff members are working safely and abiding by established safety policies and procedures; identify, report, and following up on unsafe conditions

- Clear and effective communications skills, both orally and in writing, to all levels of people inside and outside the organization, including possession of good English-speaking skills, fluency, and understandability
- Effective time management skills while remaining detail-oriented and organized, successfully prioritizing and managing multiple tasks and numerous long and short-term projects
- Exceptional technical and problem-solving skills and reasoning ability
Education, Skills, and Experience:
- Required: 5+ years’ experience with label applications in the printing or packaging industry in a technical and/or leadership role; bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field a PLUS
- Required: Computer skills to include Microsoft Office products; CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar a PLUS
- Required: Electro-Mechanical background
- Required: Travel, approximately once or twice per month
